Richard Huffman and Douglas Murphy began working together in the floorcovering business over 25 years ago, first as installers, and more recently as owners, when they founded Thoroughbred Carpets of Austin in December of 1994.
Thoroughbred Carpets of Austin opened its doors for the first time at 201 First Street NE, just two doors down from their current location. It wasn't long before the business took off and they had to move to a new location, 204 First Street NE,which offered a much larger showroom.
In the first few years of operation, Rich and Doug not only ran the business, but also continued to do much of the installation themselves. In 1999 they added a part-time salesperson to the operation. In 2001, Rich's wife Janet Huffman joined the staff as a part-time bookeeper. In 2005, Joe Huffman joined the sales team full-time after a number of years of installing floors. Now, installation is taken care of by a core group of certified independent flooring mechanics.
Unfortunately, on May 12, 2005, Doug Murphy passed away unexpectedly. He will be sorely missed by the whole crew at Thoroughbred Carpets.
In December 2008, our building was purchased by Mower County to make way for a new jail and justice center. We then moved to our current location in the Lakeside Center Shopping Plaza at 201 11th Street NE in Austin.
